This is practiced in Chinese provinces and autonomous regions of Tibet, Qinghai, Sichuan, and Inner Mongolia, as well as in Mongolia, Bhutan, and parts of India such as Sikkim and Zanskar. Heavenly preparation and burial sites in the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition are understood as burials. Similar practices are part of Zoroastrian burial rituals in which the deceased is exposed to the elements and scavenging birds on stone structures called dokhma.

Celestial burial is comparatively widespread burial custom among Tibetans, and it is also called "bird burial." The body is placed on a mountaintop, where it is exposed to the elements and the natural process of decomposition. Vultures and other birds of prey consume the remains, and it is believed that this allows the soul to ascend to the afterlife while the body returns to nature.
