“normalcy bias” are the “gorilla moments” when something truly unusually and unexpected happens, something way outside your cognitive model and with which you have no prior experience or predictive matrix.
it’s a cognitive loophole. things get “too crazy to see.”
this is the human phenomenon upon which "the big lie" is based. do somehting sufficiently outrageous, and no one can believe it.
they cannot even perceive it.
their mind makes up a story to explain it away.
try reading this. does your mind immediately flip to “that must be fake?” mine does, and i’m an online conspiracy cat…

Still fighting this freaking flu - or whatever it is…and it’s a shame I no longer have tampons in the cabinet - I would put one up each nostril and stop my nose from running…it’s nasty - and I know it’s a detox…trying to roll with it…where’s Tim? Hey, Tim, I need some tampons…
And the dog rescue Op is still ongoing, some progress has been made, but we’re still not there - still agonizingly coordinating a near impossible situation, it’s been a huge and frustrating challenge, not to mention the vet bills, but I haven’t completely buckled under the pressure quite yet, and this is not the moment to wimp out…
especially with “gorilla moments” coming at us from every direction…
